The first scream came from the snowbound railwayman who felt the
fangs ripping at his throat. The next month there was a scream of ecstatic agony from the
woman attacked in her snug bedroom. Now scenes of unbelieving horror come each
time the full moon shines on the isolated Maine town of Tarker Mills. No one knows who
will be attacked next. But one thing is sure.
When the moon grows fat, a paralyzing fear sweeps through Tarker Mills. For snarls that
sound like human words can be heard whining through the wind. And all around are the
footprints of a monster whose hunger cannot be sated... |

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning
visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is Stephen King's most
visionary piece of storytelling, a magical mix of fantasy and horror that may well be his
crowning achievement. This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and
macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own. A spellbinding tale of good versus evil,
it features one of Stephen King's most powerful creations - The Gunslinger, a haunting
figure who embodies the qualities of a lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to
frontier western legend. The Gunslinger's quest involves the pursuit of The Man in Black,
a liaison with the sexually ravenous
Alice, and a friendship with the kid from Earth called Jake. Both grippingly realistic and
eerily dreamlike, here is stunning proof of Stephen King's storytelling sorcery. |

If any of King's novels exemplifies his skill at portraying the
concerns of his generation, it's The Dead Zone (1979). Although it contains a
horrific subplot about a serial killer, it isn't strictly a horror novel. It's the story
of an unassuming high school teacher, an Everyman, who suffers a gap in time--like a Rip
Van Winkle who blacks out during the years 1970-75--and thus becomes acutely conscious of
the way that American society is rapidly changing. He wakes up as well with a gap in his
brain, the "dead zone" of the title. The zone gives him crippling headaches, but
also grants him second sight, a talent he doesn't want and is reluctant to use. The crux
of the novel concerns whether he will use that talent to alter the course of history. |

- En route to Lake Tahoe for a much anticipated vacation, the Carver
family is arrested for blowing out all four tires on their camper. Collie Entragian is the
arresting officer, the self-made sheriff of a town called Desperation, Nevada, and the
quintessential bad cop. Unbeknownst to the Carvers, Entragian regularly sniffs out
passerbys on this stretch of road, and in fact has done in nearly every resident of his
hometown. He can also change form and summon the help of creepy creatures, including
scorpions, snakes and spiders. Though the family seems doomed, an unlikely hero emerges
--11-year-old David Carver--who finds his own way to get around the Law.
